Xanthelasma is a common cosmetic issue, and most people who are affected by xanthelasma are 40 yrs or older. It is also slightly more common in men than in women. Dr Jha at Renew Clinic frequently sees clients who have xanthelasma suggests that all these such patients must see their GPs and get their blood cholesterol checked and treated if their levels are high enough to be treated together with lifestyle modification including regular physical exercises.
Conventionally they are treated by excision by eye surgeons or oculoplastic surgeons, and the results are generally acceptable with some degree of scarring. At Renew Skin and Health Clinic in Leamington Spa, Dr Jha prefers to vaporise these unsightly xanthelasma lesions with the CO2 laser, which Dr Jha believes it gives better cosmetic outcome. Dr Jha has done a fair number of cases, and the result has been promising. There is a small risk of scarring with any method of treatment together with other common postoperative complications such as wound infections, delayed healing, scarring, hypo or hyperpigmentation and so on.
It is interesting to note that the recurrence rate of xanthelasma following any method of treatment is about 40-50% even at the best centres across the globe. And Dr Jha always explains this to the patient before proceeding with the laser ablation treatment of xanthelasma. At Renew Skin and Health Clinic Dr Jha do this laser treatment under numbing injection. Corneal shields are applied to both eyes before the procedure is commenced. Please be aware that you will be fully awake during this procedure and it takes about 45 minutes to complete the procedure. Please also be mindful of the fact that you are not allowed to drive home by yourself. The wound heals within a week, and full recovery is generally achieved by four weeks.
