A series of treatments against moles have been developed over the years. First of all, from a medical point of view, typical moles can become dangerous when the melanocytes in their composition alter and change their cellular structure, becoming malignant and thus representing a health hazard. In this situation, mole treatment and mole removal becomes a primary and necessary aspect to avoid the spreading of cancerous cells to other tissues and organs. It is very well-known that the melanoma is the most easily treatable type of cancer but, in the same time, the one making the most victims. On the other hand, most moles on a person’s body are benign growths which, even if not dangerous, can still cause various inconveniences or create an unaesthetic aspect of the skin.

As mentioned before, if after a biopsy it is determined that the mole is of malignant nature, its immediate removal becomes necessary as to avoid the cancerous cell spread to other tissues and organs through the blood flow. Mole removal is made surgically, through excision. More exactly, the doctor or plastic surgeon will locally numb the mole and the surrounding area because their removal will be made through an elliptical cut using a scalpel. The mole will be further tested in a histology lab in order to assess if it really is a malignant melanoma and if it has already started to affect the adjacent tissues. The wound is then stitched and subsequently bandaged, following that the surgical threads will be removed after 4-14 days according to the place of incision.

Another atypical mole removal method is through shaving. Thus, the superior mole layers are shaved off with a medical, blade-like tool until reaching the skin surface. A local anesthetic may be required to avoid any type of discomfort during the procedure, but this method is generally painless. Nevertheless, it is possible for the subcutaneous pigment cells to become visible from under the skin or for the moles to blacken and regrow. In this situation you should immediately see a doctor as this regrowth of the mole can indicate a possibility to develop the malignant melanoma.

The laser technique is usually used on flat, brown or black moles. A laser beam is thus applied on the targeted area, reacting strictly with the melanocytes from within the nevus. After the pigments are decomposed, the skin will reabsorb them during the healing process. Several sessions are needed when undergoing this treatment, usually 2-3 in order to achieve optimum results. The advantages are obvious and clear, as it is a fast, non-invasive, scar-free treatment; its only downside is that it cannot be used on deeper moles as it doesn’t penetrate the skin to a more profound level.

Cryotherapy can also be used in mole treatment and removal. The applied liquid nitrogen will destroy the cellular tissue and hence the mole will peel and fall off. The advantage of this technique is that because of the frost caused by the liquid nitrogen, there will be no pain during the procedure, the nervous endings being paralyzed. However, cryotherapy is recommended only for the treatment of benign moles and their removal for cosmetic results as there are no scars left after.

Mole removal through electrocauterization is also called a mild destruction. This technique uses electric heat to remove the nevus and cauterize the wound. It acts only upon the superior skin layer and leaves no long-term scarring; 3-4 sessions are however needed to achieve optimum results.

According to the type of mole and its cellular structure, the specialist will be able to recommend the best and most efficient treatment. At Renew Skin & Health Clinic our doctors have acquired great experience in the field, dispose of advanced technique and technologies and are hence able to suggest an individualised and appropriate type of treatment. In our clinic, specialists recommend radiosurgery as the best method for the removal of various skin lesions including nevi. The heat generated by the passage of radio waves over the mole will decompose it at a cellular level, a few movements being enough to remove it completely. Healing is fast and scarring remains only in isolated cases.

If you have problems with certain moles, we suggest you come to Renew Skin & Health Clinic for a complimentary consultation with one of our doctors with whom you can discuss everything about skin lesions and conditions and the most suitable and appropriate solutions for them.
