While alopecia, or hair loss, is generally not associated with the loss of facial hair, many men and women are affected by this unfortunate condition. Our eyebrows and, in the case of men, our beards and sideburns, contribute a great deal to our facial expressivity. Luckily for those who are unable to grow facial hair, Renew Skin & Health Clinic now provides facial hair restoration under the form of beard transplant and eyebrow transplant.

There are several reasons why facial hair alopecia might start to manifest, including low levels of testosterone, tissue burning, scarring and trichotillomania. The facial hair restoration procedures are very similar to classic follicular unit transplantation and follicular unit extraction techniques. The follicular units, which are in fact naturally occurring groups of 1-4 strands of hair, are surgically removed from a stable donor area and transplanted to a recipient area that is presenting a complete or partial lack of hair. One of our experienced surgeons will collect follicular units from a donor area that is genetically resistant to alopecia, either individually or by using the strip-harvesting technique, and then carefully implant them in the special micro-pockets made on the surface of the recipient area. There are two main types of surgical hair transplant, each with its own advantages and disadvantages: follicular unit transplantation surgery (FUT surgery) and follicular unit extraction surgery (FUE surgery).

In the case of beard transplant and eyebrow transplant, it is generally recommended that the follicular unit extraction surgery, or FUE surgery, is used instead of FUT surgery. This is because utilizing the special FUE harvesting technique means that each follicular unit is extracted individually with the aid of a special surgical instrument, drastically reducing the level of scarring and stress to the skin of the donor and recipient areas. This aspect is especially relevant if the donor area is not covered by particularly dense hair, which unavoidably implies that it is unable to conceal larger scars. Generally, when selecting a particular donor area, the surgeon will be very careful so the transplanted follicular units match the neighboring strands of hair. For example, hair from the lower section of the beard can be used to cover the bald patches in the upper section of the beard. If there is no beard hair, then the scalp or the chest can become the main donor areas. Facial hair transplant can improve the patient’s look not only by enhancing his expressivity, but also by covering scars or other skin imperfections.

If the facial hair transplant procedure is performed by a team of experienced professionals with the use of quality instruments, then it can produce incredible aesthetic results with very little to no noticeable scarring. The experience of the surgeon and of the supporting medical staff is an essential element for the success of the final outcome. Be sure to thoroughly research the track record of the hair transplant clinic you are considering before actually deciding to undergo the facial hair restoration procedure there.
